Workforce Development
Piqua is a labor magnet, attracting more workers into the community than residents who work elsewhere. In fact, 74% of Piqua's workforce commutes into the city. Over 1 million workers participate in the labor force within a 60-mile radius.
The Ohio Means Jobs Center - Miami County assists companies in locating and screening qualified applicants to match specific staffing needs. By providing qualified, pre-screened candidates, the Job Center Network saves companies time and money in the hiring, training and retention of qualified personnel with services such as:
- Free posting of job openings
- Job fairs
- Assistance in scheduling interviews, including available office space
- Pre-screening of applicants to employer-specific criteria
- Applicant assessments such as literacy, math levels, and skills as well as referrals to appropriate agencies
- Employer-related training on topics such as attendance, dress code and customer service
- Skill development training and educational programs
- Employee retention and skills upgrade seminars for current employees
- Customized short-term certifications
The Upper Valley Career Center offers outstanding career development counseling and training for students planning their future, for adults wanting to upgrade their skills or change career, or employers planning corporate training. Upper Valley's Adult Education Division offers affordable training relevant for today's in-demand jobs. Among the school's innovative training curriculum is its Alternative Energy and Green Systems Management program, which offers participants a variety of training in this new and growing field.
Edison State Community College provides life-long learning for Piqua area students and residents at its main campus and at several branch campuses throughout the region. The college has 3.000 students enrolled in about 30 technical fields in a broad range of developmental course work, baccaluareate transfer programs and continuing education offerings. The Business and Industry Center at Edison focuses on the needs of companies and employees in a variety of professions. From basic electrical and mechanical to automation and robotics, the Center can enhance and improve employees' skills in technical fields. It also offers courses in office productivity, human resources development and other professional development training.
The region also boasts of other educational and workforce development resources. The Dayton Region offers more than a dozen nationally recognized colleges and universities including Cedarville University, Central State University, Miami University, University of Dayton, Wilberforce University, Wittenberg University and Wright State University.
