Medical Facilities

Leading the way in providing excellent healthcare in Piqua and Miami County is the Upper Valley Medical Center (UVMC). As part of the Premier Health Partners healthcare network, UVMC is amoung the top 5% of hospitals in the country and committed to quality, compassionate, cost-effective healtcare in an environment where people always come first.

The best way to tell about Piqua's healthcare system is to explain the saga of the hospital. For many years, the cities of Troy and Piqua had their own hospitals. In between the cities was a third hospital. All the hospitals were sources of civic pride - but ultimately these hospitals were expensive to operate and duplicated many services.

As modern healthcare moved away from long hospital stays and toward more expensive technology, the hospitals felt the pinch of how to provide quality healthcare that was still easily accessible to local residents. The answer was cooperation; and through this cooperation, the new Upper Valley Medical Center was constructed between the two cities on the campus of the third hospital.

It was not easy for the cities, rivals in almost every way, to team up to provide better healthcare. But the result of that cooperation is obvious to anyone who sees the Upper Valley Medical Center. UVMC's doors opened in 1998, still within a few minutes drive for residents of Piqua. The hospital also builds new satellite medical buildings in Troy, Piqua and Tipp City to provide outpatient testing, rehabilitation and other medical services.

The hard work paid off. In recent years, the Upper Valley Medical Center received the highest score of any hosptial in its region from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Associations, a non-profit organization that rates hospitals on a lengthy list of criteria. Upper Valley Medical Center was ranked in the top five percent of hospitals in the country. It was also the third hospital in the State of Ohio to be named a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a tribute to the professionalism of the hospital's nursing staff and was among the first one hundred hospitals nationwide to earn this honor.

In 2008, the Upper Valley Medical Center joined in partnership with Premier Health Partners, the top healthcare network in the region. The affiliation, though not a merger or acquisition, solidifies a relationship that affords a formal, legal partnership with a strong regional system. Upper Valley Medical Center still specializes in being the same community hospital focused on high quality, cost effective services, but gains the strength of being a part of a larger system. The partnership enables the local hospital to expand resources, gain economies of scale and maximize efficiencies and effectiveness in important areas such as information technology and the recruitment of medical practitioners - all of which better positions the Upper Valley Medical Center to continue its mission of providing quality, cost-effective healthcare services for the Miami County area.

Another example of how the community puts the "care" into "healthcare" is through the Health Partners Free Clinic. Health Partners Free Clinic is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing medical care to uninsured residents of Miami County. Healthcare professionals donate time to provide non-emergency healthcare, follow-up care and counseling to Miami County residents. Health Partners Free Clinic is funded by the United Way, the Piqua Community Foundation, grants from other foundations, fundraisers and donations. The Health Partners Free Clinic is a testimony to the real concern the area's health care professionals have for others.

For special cases, there are specialized treatment facilities nearby. Located just minutes away is Dayton Children's Medical Center dedicated solely to the care of young people. CareFlight helicopter services can transport high-risk trauma cases to special units in Dayton in a matter of minutes. World-renowned hosptials such as the The Ohio State University Medical Center and the Cleveland Clinic are also within driving distance.
